This week’s question is about noticing the infinite possibilities for adventure within your daily life. We have more possibilities available in each moment than we realize. Modern society does not generally encourage spending time to notice these possibilities, instead it offers us ideal and ‘normal’ ways of living and moving. We are controlled and manipulated by social pressures and forget to have time to discover life in our own terms, and to relish our individuality.
We have some tasks which you can dip in and out of over the ten days to help broaden your engagement with yourself and your environment – take what interests you and post your responses. Or, you can just respond to this question as you wish. Thanks!
Task 1: For this task you need a small mirror. Hold the mirror (we recommend a mirror about the size of a book, or an A6 envelope) under your eyes reflective side up so when you look down it seems as though what’s above is below. Walk around your house or bedroom or garden or anywhere you are curious about pretending that you are walking on the ceiling or sky. With this task it is very important to also consider your safety – your eyes won’t be able to see the actual path you walk on in the way they usually would so it is probably a good idea to clear a safe path ahead of you so that there is nothing to trip you up as you go.
Task 2: Spend the whole day, or as much as possible, walking sideways.
Task 3: Opening up to the opposite; this task is about creating options for new adventures where habit may be obscuring the view.
In any action of your daily life pause and consider whether or not it is possible to do the opposite to what you are about to do – for example if you are about to turn on the tap to brush your teeth and you usually use your right hand see if you can find a way to brush your teeth using “an opposite path” maybe you can use your left hand, or your foot, whatever else springs to mind. If you decide not to go through with the opposite action that is equally valuable to notice, also we encourage you to notice why…
Task 4: Three times slower – take any task you like an attempt to do it three times slower than normal – how does this affect your experience of doing it?
Task 5: Stopping – choosing to stop occasionally in the middle of moving somewhere and having a detailed look around at where exactly you are, what you can see, what you can hear, what thoughts, feelings are present, how much you can see – what images are present for you. Take note of these by drawing a picture or writing them down.
The sounds and images you notice can be from shops, magazines, buses, television, radio, musicians, nature, people, anywhere and anything you like. Take the time you need to notice the detail and the messages presented in these sounds and images, and reflect on how they make you feel and what thoughts they present.
Love the playful mindfulness.
