Question One

by Fitzgerald & Stapleton

Can you imagine that your whole life is a dance?

Imagine a perfect circle –
at the centre of the circle is a single point and the circle is composed of an infinite amount of points at equal distance from this one central point.
Each and every single one of this infinite amount of points is necessary to the existence of the circle. If you imagine moving or removing a single one of these points then a hole or warp is created in the circle – and the circle is no longer a circle.

Let’s use the idea of the circle and its infinite number of points as a metaphor to look at this first dance. Just as each of the points that make up the circle is essential to the circle – everything that you notice in your life for the next ten days is essential to your dance. Your ability to play with this question and everything that happens to you make up the essential points of the dance. We are asking you to notice absolutely every moment of your day as part of a dance – this includes from the instant you wake up in the morning to the minute you fall asleep and even your dreams! The key here is in remembering to notice that you are seeing the dance in your daily life. You don’t have to change anything you would usually do in your daily life – this is really about NOTICING and expanding your idea of what dance is.

Dance is a way of paying close attention to our bodies and the environment in which they are moving – whether that is dancing in a studio full of other dancers, or reading a book or walking down the street. Notice how your body is affected by the environment through which it is moving – how you move in your kitchen is often different to how you will move at your school or workplace. The people around you are part of your dance too – so notice them! Your dance is in the movement of trees, traffic and distant planets. Speaking, talking and singing is also part of the dance – maybe you can even consider the noise or your breath and heartbeat as the music to your dance – likewise the ordinary sounds all around us in daily life as also part of the music of the dance.

Ten days is a long time to notice!!! Remember – if you realise that you have forgotten to see things as a dance, its ok, realising that you have forgotten is simply an opportunity to start noticing the dance again!

Roll through your life and let us know how it feels to regard everything as essential to the dance.

If you like we have some questions below to help you frame a response.
Or just go wild and tell us whatever stands out in your memory – thanks

My dance is like a …

1. Does it have a colour?

2. Does it have a texture?

3. What would it weigh?

4. What size do you imagine it to be?

5. What temperature would it be?

6. What would it feel like if you could hold this dance in your hand?

7. What sound(s) (if any) does it make?

8. What sound(s) (if any) would you like it to make?

9. Does it move or is it stationary?

10. What would it say if it could speak?
